IT’S OUR TIME

WITH THE WORLD ORDER having been rearranged economically and politically over the past few
years, many nations have turned inward, not without cause. While Canada has rightly
looked to expand overseas markets for our resources and goods, when it comes to energy,
keeping it in-house makes the most sense.
Numerous recent announcements across the country point to governments planning for
the increase of electricity demand and looking to secure our energy future.
The federal government announced, alongside the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador, a historic agreement to upgrade and expand the Churchill Falls Generating Station and develop the Gull Island project and related transmission, building one of
the largest electricity projects in North America.
As part of this agreement, the federal government will provide $10 billion in federal
昀椀nancing.
“Canada is extending its unique advantage in clean, reliable, and a昀昀ordable power.
Because when we master energy, we master our destiny. Through cooperative federalism,
we are unlocking our immense potential, building big, building sustainably, building in
partnership, and building Canada strong for all,” said Prime Minister Carney.
Together, these projects will generate 14,000 megawatts of clean, renewable power –
nearly tripling the current generating capacity of Churchill Falls, enough power to light,
heat, and cool all the homes in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver combined.
In Ontario, the new Etobicoke Greenway project, a 230-kilovolt line running 6.5 kilometres through an existing corridor in Etobicoke reached completion. The project will deliver
up to 300 megawatts of electricity.
The province is also advancing the Toronto Third Line a major transmission project
identi昀椀ed to meet the region’s rapidly growing electricity needs. Once built, the TTL will
deliver up to 900 megawatts to Toronto’s downtown core.
In Atlantic Canada, NB Power announced it is moving forward with the Mactaquac Life
Achievement Project, signing of an agreement with a consortium to advance the civil work
component.
As one of New Brunswick’s most critical sources of electricity, the project will rehabilitate the Mactaquac Generating Station-built in 1968-to ensure the station can operate to
its intended 100-year lifespan. The civil works scope includes rehabilitation of the powerhouse and spillways, the replacement of six turbines, upgrading electrical and mechanical
components, and enhancing upstream and downstream water storage and environmental
infrastructure. The Mactaquac Generating Station provides approximately 12 per cent of
the province’s electricity.
In the current geopolitical context, it is vital for every nation to secure its energy future.
With renewable energy projects such as the ones previously mentioned, in addition to
many more being built and planned across the country, we are well on the road to ensuring
our energy independence.
