manufacturing capacity so that more of the components powering our
grid are made in Canada.
National Electricity Strategy and the opportunity to help shape Canada’s
clean electricity future.
The work of doubling the grid is already underway. Through the Major
Projects O昀케ce (MPO), the government is advancing clean electricity
generation projects—including hydroelectric projects like the
Taltson Hydro Expansion in the Northwest Territories and the Iqaluit
Nukkiksautiit Hydro Project in Nunavut, nuclear generation projects such
as Darlington New Nuclear in Ontario, clean electricity transmission lines
like the North Coast Transmission Line in British Columbia, and major
wind developments like Wind West in Nova Scotia.
“Canada’s electricity demand is growing rapidly, and we need practical
solutions that can be deployed quickly to support reliability, a昀昀ordability
and economic growth,” said CanREA’s President and CEO Vittoria Bellissimo. “The strategy released today con昀椀rms that renewables and energy storage are a critical part of the solution to power Canada’s future.”
In parallel, the feds are providing support through the clean economy
investment tax credits and other investment incentives, to tightened
methane regulations and strengthened industrial carbon pricing.
Through the Climate Competitiveness Strategy, they are unlocking
hundreds of billions in investment across nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, and
grid infrastructure.
As the national voice for wind energy, solar energy and energy storage,
the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) welcomes the
CanREA recently released a new report, Watts at Stake, which 昀椀nds that
Canada is well positioned to capture up to $200 billion in clean power investment. The report highlights that while the fundamentals are in place—
including high-quality resources, stable institutions, federal investment tax
credits and a strong slate of projects in procurement—improvements are
needed in the systems that move projects from approval to construction.
